When talking about system for hospital we have to consider
some factors that are crucial for choice of technologies.Those
factors could be grouped as follows:
• Easiness of implementation – match of project
requirements to its complexity.Its not good to use advanced
tools for easy job.On the other hand using simple
technologies can produce unwanted restrictions and
limitations.
• Application has o be available for several users on
computers among local area network.
• Implementation and later maintenance with possibly
low costs.
• Avoid using old and deprecated technologies,often
not supported by their authors.
In the hospital is already existing network system so it will
be easy to use client-server architecture.In this case first
solution that comes to mind is application accessible over
HTTP protocol.This is good idea because almost every PC
has installed web browser working in graphical mode,so each
one can easily become a client.
Basic choice is selection of technology.I could decide to
write static HTML pages or build them dynamically.While
first option is not really exciting I looked for the dynamic
technologies.Currently there are three most popular
languages.Those are:PHP,ASP and JSP.ASP is product of
Microsoft company.It is very good tool but also expensive -
there is no free version of this language,there is also no server
that can work for application created in this language (except
Internet Information Services).PHP is now not so popular as
it was few years ago.It is also not so advanced and flexible as
JSP.Java Server Pages is real programming language (Java)
and with thousands of free of charge applications,frameworks
and tools is really powerful.And regardless of all of that it is
still gratuitous.Connected with chosen technology is web
application.For JSP server I selected the most popular servlet
container named Apache Tomcat that is released under
Apache Software License.
