Welcome to ChongQing! My name is XXX , and my English name is Shirley. I’m very glad to be your local guide for today’s visit. On behalf of our travel agency, we hope that all of you will feel as good as today’s sunshine and enjoy yourselves here. In the following time we will have a visit on the There Gorges of Yangtze River-one of nature’s most fantastic sights by ship. During the tour if you have any questions or some good ideas please point them out, I’ll try my best to satisfy you. Wish you a wonderful journey!
Above all, I’d like to give you a brief introduction of the Three Gorges. The Yangtze Three Gorges is one of the ten most famous tour sites of China , proudly stands at the first place of the best fourteen in China’s hottest scenic spots. Extend about 192 kilometers ,the Three Gorges made up of Qutang Gorge、 Wu Gorge and Xiling Gorge .It starts from Baidi Castle ,Fengjie town in Sichuan Province to Nanjinguan of Yichang City in Hubei province, The gorges vary from 300m at their widest to less than 100m at their narrowest. The three parts of the gorges have their own characteristics.
Now, look through the windows, please. This is the first one—Qutang Gorge which wins its fame for grand precipice. The Qutang Gorge is only 8km. It is the smallest and shortest one in the Three Gorges, but its landscape is the most magnificent. The Yangtze River runs very fast here, and it suddenly looks like a thousand of seas poured into one cup.
As the ship going on, we have arrived the Wu Gorge which got the name from the Wu Mountain. The Wu Gorge extends about 44km well known for its profound beauty. Traveling in the deep seems like sailing in a nature gallery. Whenever the visitors arrived here, they were all fascinated by the famous 12 peaks of Wu Mountain. The 12 peaks stand thousands of meters high above the water. Their shapes are various and each of them has a reputation based on a beautiful legend . Goddess Peak stands out from the other peaks on the north bank. It is the most beautiful and upright one among them.
Look, over there! A huge rock towering among the rosy clouds in the Qingfeng, just looks like a slim and beautiful young lady.It is the Goddess Peak .Every day the Goddess Peak is the first to great the morning sun and the last to bid it farewell.
Downsream from the zigzagging Wu Gorge is the Xiling Gorge . The Xiling Gorge starts from Xiangxikou in the west and ends to Nanjinhguan of YiChang in the east. Its total length of 78 kilometers rans the longest in the Three Gorges. The name “Xiling”means “west mountains”in our Chinese becouse it located in the west of Yichang.Xiling Gorge takes on the typical scenery ot the later Three Gorges, and the scene is very splended here.
Time flies, our visit is coming to an end and its very difficult for me to say goodbye to you. I highly appreciate your understanding and cooperation. I don’t expect that all of you will remember me, but I really hope that my service is of help to you. Thank you very much and best wishes to you .

The history of great wall, Juyongguan Pass and Badaling Great wall
The Great Wall, symbolizing China’s ancient civilization, is one of the world’s most famous projects. It is the longest defensive all in the world. In 1987, UNESCO put the Great Wall on the list of world’s cultural heritage sites.
Construction of the Great Wall started from the 7th century BC, from the Spring and Autumn and the Warring states periods. At that time, there were many small kingdoms under the Zhou dynasty. Each of the Kingdoms built their own walls around their territory for self-protection. The earliest great wall emerged in Qin and Chu states. In 221 BC, Emperor Qinshihuang defeated other kingdoms and unified China. He ordered to link up the separated walls and extend them. After the renovations, the whole wall stared from Lintao in the west to Liaodong in the east. The total length is around 7000 kilometers. This was the first climax of building the Great Wall in Chinese History.
The second climax of building the great wall happened during the Han dynasty. In order to increase the defense capabilities and protect the newly-opened silk roads, the 20,000-li Han Great Wall was constructed. It started from Xinjiang in the west to Liaodong in the east, becoming the longest great wall in Chinese history.
The third climax of the building the Great Wall was in the Ming dynasty. From the emperor Zhuyuanzhang, a great number of soldiers were dispatched to the northern border to rebuild the wall. The Great Wall in the Ming Dynasty had been consolidated; a great number of watchtowers and beacon towers had been built. It started from Hushan, Liaoning provience in the east to Jiayuguan Pass, Jiangsu Province in the west. The total length is around 7000 kilometers.
(Function)The great wall effectively stopped the attacks from Nomad groups in ancient China. The stationed troops dispatched to the northern border cultivated the land and developed the economy. People could live harmoniously in the peaceful environment. They could contact and communicate freely with each other. In a word, the great wall is a bridge between various ethnic groups and also a bridge between Asian and European continents.
(Structure)The average height of the wall is 7.8 meters, the average width of the base is 6.5 meters, and the average width on the surface is 5.8 meters. On the surface of the wall, five horse-men can ride abreast, 10 people can stand abreast. On surface of the basement there are two walls on both sides. The inner one is parapet, which is about one meter high, the outer one is battlements wall, which is about two-meter high. In the battlements wall, there are battlements and buttresses successively. The outstanding part of the wall is called battlement while the low-lying part of the wall is called buttress. On each battlement, there are holes for shooting and observation. There are also gargoyles on the wall.
The watchtowers are two stories high; some are even three stories high. There are windows in four directions. Watchtowers could be directly used to shoot the enemies who were climbing up the wall, and they could also be used to store weapons and accommodate soldiers at night.
Platforms are built on the surface of the wall. They are wide enough for training soldiers and standing on guard.
The beacon tower is also called “wolf dung tower”. The beacon towers are usually built on top of mountains or at the turn of mountains. Most of them are independent architectures separate from the great wall. They are used for sending out military messages. Once the enemy came to attack, fires were lit to send messages. Smoke were made during the daytime and fire at night.
The road we are driving on is called Guangou valley. Over 800 years ago, it used to be one of the famous “Eight views of Yanjing”. Along the 20 kilometers long valley, there are four passes called Xiaguan, Juyongguan pass, Shangguan and Badaling pass. Because those passes are situated between high mountains with only one road leading to Beijing, it has great military significance.
In the center of the Junyongguan pass, there’s a massive marble terrace called “the cloud terrace”, which was built in Yuan dynasty of 1345. The Cloud Terrace covers an area of 310 square meters. It used to be called Crossing Street Dagoba. Under the terrace is the gateway. The gateway is in arch structure carved with 5 fabulous animals for Buddha to ride. The inner roof of the arch is carved with mandala patterns and Buddha images surrounded by flowers. There are also Buddhist Scriptures inscribed in 6 languages.
Badaling was the best preserved part of the great wall. It was rebuilt in Ming Dynasty along the Jundu Mountain and Guangou Valley. This part is 12 kilometers long, with 24 watchtowers. Bada in Chinese means convenient gateway to all directions, so Badaling was constructed to be a communication center in ancient China.
On the right side of the Jundu Mountain, you can see a railway. That’s the railway from Beijing to Zhangjiakou. This is the first railway line in China designed and presided by the Chinese Engineer Zhantianyou. This part of the railway was built on a steep mountain slope, so the construction process was extremely difficult.
“Key to the North gate” is an inscription written on the gate of Badaling. That means Badaling is like a key to the gate of Beijing, once the key is unlocked the whole city is open.
The looking-forward Beijing rock is on the east side of Badaling. It was said that the empress dowager Cixi passed here on her way of fleeing to the north.
