The question of effectiveness can be illuminated by comparing the drivers of effectiveness from an Eastern country (China) and a Western country (Australia) to identify differences and similarities across countries.To operationalize this question,we use a study of direct selling in China by Luk,Fullgrabe,and Yi (1996) as our benchmark.By replicating the essence of that study,we can compare the effectiveness drivers in the two countries.Some small adaptations and extensions further strengthen the model.We can draw some conclusions about how the relative roles of product and relationships as drivers of direct selling effectiveness differ between the two countries and therefore,symbolically,between the East and the West.The study draws out the implications for direct selling enterprises operating in either or both Western or Eastern markets.
