乐队名字Beyond是第一代结他手邓炜谦所改,意思为「超越」.在1998年出版的乐队自传书籍《拥抱Beyond岁月》中,鼓手叶世荣曾解释,由於乐队成员喜爱拥有自己的创作,有别於当时其他乐队多数翻唱外国乐队的作品,故"Beyond"有超越一般乐队所涉足的音乐领域的意思,但叶世荣也重申,他们把乐队命名"Beyond",并不是要超越别人,而是要超越自己.
乐队成员人数曾多达五名,但以黄家驹、黄家强、黄贯中、叶世荣的四人阵容最为人熟悉.黄家驹离世后,乐队没有加入新队员填补,维持三名成员至2005年解散.
真正令Beyond推上高峰的,是1989年以歌颂母亲为题的作品《真的爱你》.由於歌曲大热,连带收录该歌曲的专辑《Beyond IV》获得双白金成绩,同年Beyond假伊利沙伯体育馆举行七场「真的见证演唱会」.1990年推出粤语专辑《命运派对》,更获得三白金佳绩.

Beyond the band's name is the first guitarist Tang Wei Qian of the change,meaning "beyond."
