1.用动词的过去分词caused作定语修饰illness,表示被动.其实完整句子也可以这样用定语从句表达,是这样：He died of an illness (which was caused) by smoking too much.
2.boiled water意思是：煮开了的水,即开水.boiling water意为：沸腾着的水.
3.seat可用作动词也可用作名词,动词的过去分词seated作为形容词状态,这里remained seated at the table是指依然坐在桌边,这分句也可以这样来表示：my husband was still seated at the table.
reading the newspaper是伴随状态：看报纸.
caused 用它因为1：词义决定，2：它的主语是前面的illness 因为这个小复合句里主语illness和宾语smoking是被动关系 所以用过去时表被动
boiling 在这里用现在进行时表状态，正在开着的水
seated 用过去时表状态 因为seat这词名词表座位，做动词时候一直是以被动形式出现的 表示坐着这种状态
