Business Areas
Konecranes' activity is organised along three global business areas: Heavy Lifting, Standard Lifting and Service. The activity is coordinated in three regions; Europe, Americas and Asia-Pacific.
The importance to industry of proper service of machinery and reduction of downtime has made Service an important Business Area of Konecranes, with 32% of Group sales. In addition to the strength within service, Konecranes performs strongly in winning orders for new cranes based on its high-performance technology. Konecranes' Heavy Lifting products are highly sophisticated cranes for a wide variety of process industries, harbours and shipyards. Konecranes' Standard Lifting Business Area provides an advanced product range for lifting capacities of less than 50 tons.
Cross selling opportunities between business areas
Globally, there are many synergies and an important element of cross selling opportunities between the business areas. Service create opportunities for new equipment sales and inspire R&D-work. Also over 1.5 million service and equipment sales calls p.a. are placed through service operations in more than 370 locations worldwide. The Company offers service to crane customers and sells new cranes to maintenance customers. New breakthroughs in R&D give Konecranes entrance to new customer industries both in cranes and service. There are multiple entry possibilities for the business.
Our Business Area Service is the world’s leading provider of preventive service for electric overhead travelling cranes and harbours cranes, and other material handling equipment for ports. Konecranes Service operates the world’s largest crane service network, with more than 370 service depots in 41 countries, generating more than 1.5 million service and sales calls annually.
Konecranes’ service contract base covers approximately 263,000 cranes of all types and makes. Service provides everything needed for keeping lifting systems available for safe, reliable, and uninterrupted service – from inspections, spare parts, on-call service, performance upgrades, modernisations, and preventative service programmes to site-wide service contracts.
Service's customers range from general manufacturing sites with a few cranes to large paper and steel mills, power plants, shipyards, ports, and terminals operating several hundred cranes. Cranes play a key role in the production processes of many of these customer industries.
Vision
Konecranes’ vision is to lead the way worldwide in reshaping crane service– and is based on the belief that outsourced crane service provided by a network of crane specialists is the most effective way for crane owners to maximise the availability of their equipment and minimise their overall operational and service costs. This approach has helped create a genuine growth market for Konecranes.
Strategy
Konecranes will continue to develop all aspects of our service offering and will utilise our leading position, in this growth market, to sustain and accelerate the Group’s overall organic growth, providing a significant sales channel for the Group’s products and reinforcing long-term customer relationships. Service is also committed to developing new service technologies, and using its extensive network to collect service and condition data for R&D and product innovation.
Outsourcing is a key driver
The key drivers fuelling demand for Konecranes’ service are companies’ need to become more competitive and keep costs in control, the increased complexity of material handling technology, and safety concerns.
As globalisation of industry continues to increase, more and more companies are outsourcing crane service to help them control costs and be more competitive, introduce enhanced technologies, and access specialist expertise. Konecranes helps customers achieve these goals not simply by maintaining cranes, but by focusing on resources that will give customers a better long-term return on their service spending through increased uptime in their production processes and reduced overall ownership costs.
An estimated 70% of all crane service is still carried out by in-house staff. Although the largest global player in the field, Konecranes’ share of the global outsourced service market is estimated at only around 5%. The potential inherent in these figures, therefore, makes service a genuine growth market for Konecranes.
Our Standard Lifting Business Area is a world-leading provider of industrial cranes and lifting systems with capacities ranging from 100 kg to 100 tonnes.
A comprehensive product offering – extending all the way from industrial cranes, wire rope and chain hoists, and workstation cranes to jib cranes, monorail and light crane systems, and explosion-proof lifting equipment – means that Konecranes can provide a solution for virtually all lifting needs.
The product offering is based on a family of independent, regional brands, all with their distinct profiles – Morris Material Handling in the UK, Verlinde in France, SWF in Germany, R&M Materials Handling in the US, and Meiden Hoist System, a joint venture, in Japan – together with the Konecranes brand, which is used for our integrated offering and service. Konecranes has a unique advantage, as products are distributed through Konecranes' own service network which operates from more than 370 locations in 41 countries. Products are based on standardised components and product platforms, and are manufactured at plants in Finland, the US, China, France, Germany and the UK. The acquisition of R.Stahl Fördertechnik GmbH at the end of 2005 has added a further brand to the family.
The Standard Lifting customers come from virtually all industries, most typically smaller workshops in the general manufacturing sector, automotive manufacturing, and warehousing.
Vision
Konecranes’ vision is to consolidate its position as the technology leader in electric wire rope hoists and industrial cranes, and to be one of the fastest-growing global suppliers of workstation cranes and chain hoists.
Strategy
Our Standard Lifting Business Area is a world-leading provider of industrial cranes and lifting systems with capacities ranging from 100 kg to 100 tonnes. Standard Lifting's strategy is based on a broad market presence leveraging Konecranes’ own service network, independent dealers and a multibrand portfolio. A commitment to continuous product development, benefits of scale and operational flexibility provided by global product platforms, strength in growth markets and an active acquisition policy provides Konecranes with excellent future growth opportunities.
Meeting the need for better supply chains
Global industrial developments and the rationalisation of many production processes are among the key factors driving demand for Standard Lifting products. Customers need faster, safer, and more efficient lifting systems if they are to create better supply chains.
Our Heavy Lifting Business Area is the world’s leading provider of heavy-duty cranes for process industries, and a global supplier of cranes and lift trucks for ports, terminals, and shipyards.
Products include heavy-duty process cranes, shipyard gantry cranes, ship-to-shore container cranes, shipboard gantry cranes, RTG (rubber-tired gantry) and RMG (rail mounted gantry) cranes, reachstackers, straddle carriers, empty container handlers, and heavy-duty forklift trucks. These are manufactured at the company’s own plants in Finland, Sweden, the UK, USA, and China; and by partners in Poland, the Ukraine, Estonia, and China.
The main customers of Heavy Lifting include primary metal producers, large manufacturing workshops, warehousing companies, pulp and paper producers, energy utilities, waste-to-energy producers, automotive manufacturers, shipbuilders, small and medium-sized ports, and intermodal terminals.
Vision
Konecranes’ vision is to cement its position as the recognised leader in heavy-duty cranes for process industries, and become the world leader in high-performance, reliable harbour and shipyard cranes and lift trucks.
Strategy
The strategy of Heavy Lifting is based on continuous product development and innovation, coupled with world-class service designed to improve the productivity and profitability of customers’ processes and ensure that Konecranes continues to offer customers the lowest total lifetime cost of ownership available. To maximise supply chain flexibility, Heavy Lifting has prioritised the use of modular product platforms, which enables products to be manufactured in-house and by manufacturing partners, according to market needs.
Increasing globalisation is driving growth
The key drivers fuelling demand for the Heavy Lifting Businesses™ – and more sophisticated material handling solutions generally – continue to be the trend towards greater globalisation, more containerisation, the transfer of production to new countries, and companies’ ongoing search for greater cost efficiencies.
Best customer service
Konecranes is committed to always offering the best customer service in the industry. To us, quality of service is based on safety, reliability, and high-performing technology with which we improve customers’ efficiency and productivity. Even in developed outsourcing markets, an estimated two thirds of all service of lifting equipment is still carried out in-house. Outsourcing this service offers benefits such as improved cost efficiency, safety, and increased uptime, and has created a genuine growth market that fuels our organic growth. Our strategy is optimized for tapping into the service industry’s global growth potential.
Product and service innovation
Konecranes is committed to developing industry-shaping technologies for both lifting equipment and their service. Using the vast knowledge that we have accumulated by having the world’s largest service organization, we know what customers need and how to develop the solutions for different environments. By combining our service knowledge and new technologies, we create lifting solutions that maximize value to our customers. We minimize downtime and optimize the total cost of ownership.
Demand driven, cost-efficient supply chain
An efficient supply chain and continuous optimization of operational efficiency is pivotal for Konecranes. We are transforming us from a regional buy-make-sell model to a global buy-move-makemove-sell anywhere model. We are geared to respond efficiently to changes in market demand throughout the chain. Our products are based on modularity and standardization, and make use of the latest technology and designs with an efficient use of raw materials. Maintaining a globally uniform product platform gives us valuable flexibility in terms of capacity utilization and resource allocation. Increased production in expanding markets such as Asia and Eastern Europe offers great opportunities to improve both our competitiveness and cost levels. This has involved increasing outsourcing in low-cost countries and outsourcing of own manufacturing. The role of quality management has therefore become of even greater importance.
Value-creating acquisitions
The cranes industry is still, today, very fragmented, and Konecranes has the financial and managerial resources to lead the consolidation of the industry. The Konecranes growth strategy is based on continued organic growth in markets where we are established – paired with an aggressive plan for acquisitions to enter new geographical markets or to fill a gap in our product portfolio. Well recognized local or regional brands, with large installed bases, remain the primary target for Konecranes’ acquisition policy.
Growth Drivers
Konecranes' competitiveness and leading position are based on the strategy of combining professional crane service with leading innovative technology.
Today's high-tech cranes are an integral part in our customers' production processes. If not serviced properly a crane can rapidly disable the customer's entire production line. There is therefore an ever-growing need for expert crane service. Outsourcing of crane service has become a genuine growth market and the main driver for the Group's organic growth.
The many cross-selling opportunities between Business Areas also contribute substantially to the organic growth potential of the Group. Konecranes service network, with more than 370 outlets in 41 countries, is unique in the industry. Increasingly, that network also serves as a very efficient distribution channel for Standard Lifting products fuelling the growth also in that Business Area.
Konecranes is the global leader in heavy-duty cranes and one of the largest standard crane and component builders enjoying a clear lead in technology. Innovative new products are important in our ambition to secure our position as the global market leader and in further increasing our global market share. Our strategy is not to rely on traditional solutions but, instead, strive to produce cranes in which performance and reliability are optimally combined at competitive prices. We do not collect components from different manufacturers; instead, we design and manufacture the key components in-house and supply integrated solutions.
